Mumps Symptoms In Adults

Mumps is a contagious illness which is caused due to a virus that results in swelling of the neck. The Mumps Symptoms in Adults develops after a fortnight a person is affected by the virus. The mumps virus is a Ribonucleic virus. The virus is present inside the mucus of the nose and throat which spreads when a infected person coughs or sneezes and the infected mucus goes inside another body through the nose and throat. The disease is common among children but is more serious in case of adult. The most distinct symptom of mumps is swelling of the parotid glands. In fact mumps is a expression of lumps within the cheeks.

Mumps Symptoms In Adults

Muscle Pain :

Patients suffering from mumps complain of muscle pain and they are unable to perform simple task due to severe pain. The patients can’t even breathe properly after straining  activity or physical exercise.

Swelling Of Parotid Glands:

These glands are present on either side of the cheek, between ear and jaw. It is responsible for production of saliva in the body. Due to mumps the glands swells up and stops producing saliva. At later stages the swelling increases which makes it difficult to chew and swallow food.

Weakness and Fatigue:

The person is unable to do any physical activity due to weakness. A patient feels extreme tiredness and laziness. The body gets exhausted very soon and energy level of the body drops down tremendously.

Swelling In Testes And Ovaries:

The testes of men swell up and it takes up to five days to come back to original size. It is one of the complicated symptoms whereas, in case of women the ovaries swells up due to which there is a pain in the lower abdominal region. The risk of abortion increases if a pregnant woman is suffering from mumps.

Nausea:

Mumps symptoms in Adults include mild abdominal pain. The person feels discomfort in the abdomen region and has a urge to vomit several times.

Loss Of Appetite:

There is no urge to eat and the appetite of the patient falls down. It is very painful to chew and swallow food with swollen glands due to which adults suffering from mumps avoid eating food. This leads to low energy level of the body and thus causes weakness.

Fever:

It is one of the initial Mumps Symptoms In Adults which mostly lasts for three to four days and then fades away. The body temperature rises suddenly which is followed by headache.

Dry Mouth :

Saliva moistens the mouth and helps in digestion of food. The parotid glands produce saliva but in case of mumps patients saliva production is very less due to which the mouth dries up which is very discomforting for the patients.

Proper care should be taken when Mumps symptoms In Adults are visible. Proper medication should be taken to curb the effects of symptoms and reduce the discomfort.  Drink lots of liquid to avoid the difficulty of chewing.   As with other viral diseases, antibiotics aren’t effective for mumps. Most adults recover from mumps within ten days however, the patient should be isolated so that it doesn’t spread to other people present in his surroundings.
